Why should you hire a professional removals company?

If you have moved home before, you will understand that it is no easy feat. With stress levels rising, moving day can a terrible experience if it is not handled correctly. If you have a driver’s licence you might feel comfortable hiring a van and doing your own house removals yourself, with the help of some of your friends and family.
When you actually factor in all the costs that are involved in doing your removals yourself, you might find out that it may cost more than you think and for that little extra it may cost you to hire a professional removal company, it would be worth every penny. Here is a rough guide of the costs involved for doing a local removal within a few miles:
DIY Removals (estimate costs)
Van hire for the day = £80.00
         Fuel = £30.00 (small house)
If you can get friends or family to help with the removals as a favour then there will be no additional charge other than having to buy extra tea bags, coffee and milk (maybe some biscuits too). You could try to source some old boxes from super markets all though this is being increasing difficult as supermarkets are more reluctant to help than they used to be.
You may find that you use more than the above estimated fuel as the van you will hiring will be much smaller than the removal vans a professional removal firm would use meaning that you would have to take more trips back and forth with your household goods and personal effects.
Total cost (estimate) = £110.00 - £130.00 GBP + VAT
Additional fees may include any corrections needed to repair any damage done to the hired vehicle; also you may have to include the loss of wages due to any time taken off work from result of damaging yourself from incorrect lifting of heavy goods which can make DIY removals very expensive.
Removal Company (estimate costs)
2 bed house = £190.00 GBP plus VAT
3 bed house = £390.00 GBP plus VAT
         4 bed plus house = £495.00 GBP - £525.00 GBP plus VAT
Above is a very rough guide of prices for removal companies, almost all rates are generally tailored to your requirements so you could live in a 4 bed house however you only want a removal company to move the large furniture meaning you will be charged less.
For an all-in figure you are getting a complete service from a removal company without the stress and worry of doing all the heavy lifting yourself, in fact you can put your feet up and let them move everything for you; just don’t forget to move otherwise you may end up in the back of the removal van with your furniture!
By leaving the removals to the professionals, your goods are in trained hands. They will have all the correct professional equipment to get your goods out of your home and into your new home as safely as possible. Your goods will also be insured against any damage whilst in the care of the removal company to give you further piece of mind.
Make sure you check the insurance policy of the removal firm before booking.

Moving Day

So the big day has finally arrived and you are moving out of your home and into your new place, here you will find some top tips to help you through this big day and to help reduce stress. If you are hiring a van and moving yourself then make sure you only top up as much fuel as you need and no more as you will not get the money back for any fuel left in the vehicle, also make sure you go around the hire van yourself making sure that the tyres are legal and it is safe to drive.

Once you are happy carefully load the hire van with your pre-packed boxes and/or bags making sure that heavy boxes are at the bottom and light boxes are stack towards the top. Use bags, blankets, cushions or anything else soft to fill any spaces to prevent goods from moving during transit. If the hire van has tie points then secure items with straps to prevent goods from moving and causing damage.

You may need to make a few trips in a hire van as they aren’t the biggest removal vehicles around, especially if you have plenty of furniture. The alternative option is that you may have hired a removal company to move your household goods and personal effects for you. In this case it may be worth purchasing some plastic disposable cups so that you can keep yourself hydrated and also so that you can offer the removal men a drink as you may have already packed away all of your cups and glasses.

A good removal company will arrive on time and fully prepared for all your needs with removal equipment such as; A large removal van, a tail lift, moving blankets, padded sofa covers and materials to secure goods for transit. An experienced removal company such as First Base Freight offer a professional service with all of the above.

Top tips

Bag your freezer food and place it back in the freezer, most removal men will not mind taking the freezer if it is still loaded however if you have a larger chest freezer the food can add a lot of addition weight and will need to be removed. Once the freezer is loaded in the removal van it can be restocked with the pre-bagged frozen food.

If you are exchanging contracts on the day of your move, allow for delays and book your removal company to meet you later in the day, this will help prevent the removal team waiting around if there is a delay in getting your keys and will also help prevent additional waiting charges.

If you have large furniture such as a dining table, wardrobes or double beds these will need to be dismantled preferable the day before the move or in the morning before the removal team arrive. Washing machines will need to be un-plumbed and cookers disconnected.

Label boxes with contents or create an inventory, you might think you will remember where everything is however after moving everything and trying to arrange where everything goes in your new home, it’s easy to forget.

If you have any pets or children then it may help to ask a friend or family member to help you look after them, moving home can be stressful and your full attention will be needed to arrange for boxes to be placed in the right place.
