Moving Day

So the big day has finally arrived and you are moving out of your home and into your new place, here you will find some top tips to help you through this big day and to help reduce stress. If you are hiring a van and moving yourself then make sure you only top up as much fuel as you need and no more as you will not get the money back for any fuel left in the vehicle, also make sure you go around the hire van yourself making sure that the tyres are legal and it is safe to drive.

Once you are happy carefully load the hire van with your pre-packed boxes and/or bags making sure that heavy boxes are at the bottom and light boxes are stack towards the top. Use bags, blankets, cushions or anything else soft to fill any spaces to prevent goods from moving during transit. If the hire van has tie points then secure items with straps to prevent goods from moving and causing damage.

You may need to make a few trips in a hire van as they aren’t the biggest removal vehicles around, especially if you have plenty of furniture. The alternative option is that you may have hired a removal company to move your household goods and personal effects for you. In this case it may be worth purchasing some plastic disposable cups so that you can keep yourself hydrated and also so that you can offer the removal men a drink as you may have already packed away all of your cups and glasses.

A good removal company will arrive on time and fully prepared for all your needs with removal equipment such as; A large removal van, a tail lift, moving blankets, padded sofa covers and materials to secure goods for transit. An experienced removal company such as First Base Freight offer a professional service with all of the above.

Top tips

Bag your freezer food and place it back in the freezer, most removal men will not mind taking the freezer if it is still loaded however if you have a larger chest freezer the food can add a lot of addition weight and will need to be removed. Once the freezer is loaded in the removal van it can be restocked with the pre-bagged frozen food.

If you are exchanging contracts on the day of your move, allow for delays and book your removal company to meet you later in the day, this will help prevent the removal team waiting around if there is a delay in getting your keys and will also help prevent additional waiting charges.

If you have large furniture such as a dining table, wardrobes or double beds these will need to be dismantled preferable the day before the move or in the morning before the removal team arrive. Washing machines will need to be un-plumbed and cookers disconnected.

Label boxes with contents or create an inventory, you might think you will remember where everything is however after moving everything and trying to arrange where everything goes in your new home, it’s easy to forget.

If you have any pets or children then it may help to ask a friend or family member to help you look after them, moving home can be stressful and your full attention will be needed to arrange for boxes to be placed in the right place.
